Imposter games are social deduction party games where most players secretly receive the same word, character, team, or item. One or more players (the imposters) see nothing. The game starts with a role reveal phase where everyone sees their role, then players take turns giving short clues, discuss all hints, and vote on who they think is secretly in the dark. The number of imposters scales with group size: 3-4 players have 1 imposter, 5-7 players have 2 imposters, and 8-10 players have 3 imposters.
On ImpostrGames, all of this happens on a single shared device. The site randomly assigns the secret word or item based on the game mode you choose (for example, a country, a superhero, a food, or a sports team). The rules stay the same across modes, but the theme changes to match your group.
Players take turns clicking to reveal their role. Normal players will see the word/item they need to describe, while imposters will see that they are the imposter (and won't see the word/item). This phase ensures everyone knows their role before the game begins.
Players take turns entering a one-word or short clue describing their word/item. The imposter must fake it - write something that could apply to any word/item without being too obvious or too vague.
For example:
💡 Tip: Keep your clue general but specific enough that you're not caught as the imposter!
All hints are displayed (shuffled) for everyone to see. Discuss the hints and try to figure out who might be the imposter. Look for clues that are too generic or don't seem to match the word/item well.
This is your chance to ask follow-up questions like, "What did you mean by that?" or "Can you give a different example?" Imposters will often struggle to keep their story consistent across multiple questions.
Each player votes on who they think is the imposter. You cannot vote for yourself. After all votes are cast, the results are revealed.
Encourage everyone to explain their vote out loud before confirming it. This helps surface hidden information and makes the game more social and fun.
After voting, the results are revealed. If an imposter was caught (voted out), they get one chance to guess the word/item. If they guess correctly, the imposter wins! If they guess wrong or weren't caught, the group wins!
In games with multiple imposters, you can choose to eliminate the voted-out player and continue playing with the remaining players. The game continues until all imposters are eliminated or the imposters outnumber the normal players. You can also choose to immediately start another round with a new word/item, switch to a different game mode, or change the player list.

For the Imposter:
ImpostrGames can be a great way to practice communication, listening, and deduction skills with younger players or students. For mixed-age groups, we recommend using easier themes like animals, foods, or countries and avoiding very niche references.
When you use Custom Imposter, you can also create your own safe word lists for a specific classroom topic or language level. Make sure all players understand your group's rules and follow our Community Guidelines.
All modes use the same core rules but different word lists. Here are a few examples to help you pick:
