This is a Mr. White/Imposter style game where you have to guess who is the imposter. Enter your own words or items, and everyone gets the same one to describe, except one player (the imposter) who doesn't know it. Can you spot who doesn't know it? Learn how to play

Custom Imposter lets you create your own imposter game with any words or items you want. Enter a list of words (comma-separated) above, and the game will randomly select one for each round. This mode is perfect for themed parties, classroom activities, inside jokes, or any topic your group wants to explore.
The game works exactly like other imposter modes: the game starts with a role reveal phase where players see their role and the word (if they're a normal player). Then everyone gives clues before voting. The number of imposters scales with your group: 3-4 players have 1 imposter, 5-7 players have 2 imposters, and 8-10 players have 3 imposters. The imposter gets one guess if caught. Games can continue after eliminations, allowing multiple voting rounds until all imposters are found.

Custom Imposter can become your highest-value mode because you control word quality. Build lists around one clear theme per session and keep word difficulty in the same range. The best custom lists are specific enough to produce meaningful clues but broad enough that imposters can still bluff convincingly for at least one round.
Custom: School Subject: Stronger clue: Equation-heavy | Risky clue: Math class

Custom Imposter is the most flexible mode — and the most powerful when the list is built thoughtfully. The quality of a Custom session is almost entirely determined by the word list. A great list has words that are distinct enough to be described uniquely, but close enough together that the imposter can plausibly fake their way through.

The minimum is 5 words to start a game. For best play, aim for 10 to 20 words — this prevents early repetition and gives the game enough variety across multiple rounds without words feeling recycled. You can enter as many as you want; the game will draw randomly from your list each round.
Yes — the game accepts multi-word phrases separated by commas. This is useful for lists like movie titles, character names, or specific products where a single word would be ambiguous. Keep phrases short enough that they are immediately recognizable to everyone in the group.
The most common mistakes are lists that are too narrow (all items are nearly identical, making every clue ambiguous) or too broad (items have nothing in common, so the imposter can give a safe clue about any topic). The sweet spot is a list where words are clearly in the same category but distinct enough to be described uniquely.
Everyone except the imposter sees the specific word drawn for that round — but nobody sees the full list during gameplay unless they watched you enter it. For best results, enter the list before the session with players not watching, or use a host-only device to add words while others look away.
Absolutely — it is the best mode for educational settings because the teacher controls all content. Vocabulary lists, historical figures, scientific terms, geography items, and literary characters all make excellent custom lists. See our Classroom Playbook for structured lesson formats and subject-specific list ideas.
The game draws randomly, so words may repeat in long sessions. If a word repeats back-to-back, start that round over with a new draw. For sessions with many rounds, entering a longer list (15+ words) keeps repetition rare and the game feeling fresh throughout.
