GENERAL IMPOSTER

This is a Mr. White/Imposter style game where you have to guess who is the imposter. Everyone gets the same word or topic to describe, except one player (the imposter) who doesn't know the word. Can you spot who doesn't know it? Learn how to play

About General Imposter

General Imposter is the most flexible mode in our collection. Instead of a fixed theme, players describe everyday words, objects, places, or concepts. This makes it perfect for any group since you can adapt the difficulty to your players' knowledge and interests.

The game works exactly like other imposter modes: the game starts with a role reveal phase where players see their role and the word (if they're a normal player). Then everyone gives clues before voting. The number of imposters scales with your group: 3-4 players have 1 imposter, 5-7 players have 2 imposters, and 8-10 players have 3 imposters. If an imposter is caught, they get one guess. Games can continue after eliminations, allowing multiple voting rounds until all imposters are found.

General Imposter Host Guide

General Imposter works best as the default mode because it handles mixed-age, mixed-interest groups. The key is category pacing: avoid five similar words in a row (for example, five food words) and keep variety high so clues stay meaningful. When rounds feel stale, switch to a new category family like objects, places, or activities.

Best Use Cases

  • First-time players learning social deduction fundamentals.
  • Family groups that need broad, easy-to-understand vocabulary.
  • Game nights where you want a flexible mode before switching to niche themes.

Host Tips

  • Encourage one-phrase clues rather than full sentences in early rounds.
  • If players keep tying, run a short runoff vote with only tied players.
  • Track streaks for both normal players and imposters to keep motivation high.

General Imposter Strategy Guide

General Imposter is the most accessible mode — but “accessible” does not mean easy to master. Because the words span everyday objects, places, actions, and concepts, clue strategy matters more here than in any themed mode. There is no fandom knowledge to fall back on. Every clue must be well-crafted.

Normal Player Tips

  • Pick one specific attribute — not the most obvious one
  • Reference function, location, or sensory quality
  • Avoid clues that describe many common words equally well
  • Match your specificity to your group's knowledge level
  • Early clue-givers should set a strong reference point

Imposter Survival Tips

  • Stay mid-specificity — not vague, not accidentally precise
  • Listen to the first two clues and triangulate a category
  • Use universal properties: size, color family, indoor/outdoor
  • Mirror the grammatical structure of others' clues
  • Redirect suspicion with a confident follow-up question

Strong Clue Frameworks for General Words

Objects

  • What it is made of
  • Where it is found
  • Who uses it most

Places

  • What happens there
  • Who goes there
  • Indoor vs outdoor

Concepts

  • When it applies
  • What it produces or causes
  • Its opposite

General Imposter — Frequently Asked Questions

What types of words appear in General Imposter?

The word pool covers everyday objects, common places, actions, simple concepts, and familiar items. Words are chosen to be broadly recognizable across ages and backgrounds, making this the most universally accessible mode on the site.

Is General Imposter good for first-time players?

Yes — it is the best starting mode for any new group. No domain knowledge is needed. The rules are identical to every other mode, so players can learn the clue-giving and voting loop without also needing to know a specific topic like Clash Royale or NBA teams.

How long does a typical round last?

A single round — clues, discussion, and vote — typically takes 3 to 6 minutes depending on group size and how long discussion runs. For a 30-minute block, plan 5 to 7 rounds. For a casual hour, 10 to 14 rounds is realistic.

What is the imposter's win condition?

The imposter wins a round by avoiding elimination through the voting phase. If the group fails to correctly identify the imposter, the imposter wins that round. If caught, the imposter can still win by correctly guessing the word on their one allowed guess.

Can the same word appear twice in a session?

The game draws randomly from the full word pool each round, so repetition is unlikely but possible in a very long session. If a word repeats, simply start that round over with a new draw — the game has enough variety that this rarely becomes an issue.

How should ties be handled in the vote?

Decide on a tie-break rule before the session starts. Common options: the host decides, revote with the tied players only, or no elimination (imposter survives the round). Whatever rule you pick, apply it consistently to avoid arguments mid-game.
